The New Finesse, Recall Seven, Hello Damascus

Acme Food & Drink | 1304 SE 8th Ave., 230-9020 [map]
[INDIE] In terms of indie rock, I tend to like what I like and not much else, and I know I like Hello Damascus. I like that its only release is vinyl-only on a punk record label. I like Matt Lounsbury's baritone. I like how soft-edged and unassuming the whole thing is. I love the song "Etheridge," with its three-minute snare roll and winsome, melancholy guitar melodies that make it perfect empty, nighttime backroad music. Perfect for distant mountains reflecting half-moons, or desert floors reflecting starlight. Perfect for mourning the day. I'd like it if you liked this band, too. MICHAEL BYRNE.

Floater

Aladdin Theater | 3017 SE Milwaukie Ave., 233-1994 [map]
[MOSS-ROCK] Floater shows are like a rite of passage in the Northwest. You turn 15 and attend your first real rock show, with Floater at the helm. It's where you're introduced to the angry middle-aged guy with the shaved head who flips everybody off, the belly-dancing hippie-metal girl and legions of dedicated snot-nosed kids with young parents in the balcony. Yeah, Floater's bass-driven, dreamscape stoner rock attracts all kinds of weirdos, and it hasn't changed a whole lot in the decade-plus that the band has been together. If national success never comes knocking, and at this point it probably won't, you can still take pride in a true Northwest tradition. Rock on. CASEY JARMAN.- Aladdin Theater. 8 pm doors, 9 pm show. $15 advance, $17 day of show. All ages.

Andrew King, Waldteufel; Palatine Hill

Alberta Street Public House | 1036 NE Alberta St., 284-7665 [map]
[POST-APOCALYPTIC DRUM CIRCLE] German-born former Crash Worship percussionist Markus Wolff leads local trio Waldteufel in a near-ritualistic celebration of European folk music, the German language (Wolff half-chants all the German lyrics in a low, gravelly tone) and simple rhythm, which is sometimes played on homemade instruments, such as an untuned, three-note maple xylophone. Electric bass and guitar are often used as drones, and contribute to a metal atmosphere refreshingly free of power chords. Every Waldteufel show is a different experience: Last September, the trio celebrated the harvest with thick white masks, mead and rye bread, and this performance will include no guitar—just to challenge the band and keep it interesting, I'm told. With his modernized and electronic European folk, the British Andrew Kind is a kindred spirit. JASON SIMMS. Alberta Street Public House. $10. 21+. Palatine Hill 6 pm; Waldteufel, 9:30 pm.-

Berbati's Pan | 10 SW 3rd Ave., 248-4579 [map]
[EMO ROCK] Local trio Gifford Pinchot celebrates the birth of its very first album, 1910. The songs alternate between lacy riffs with tiptoe rhythms and distorted chords with pounding drum beats. The group has both a chick and a dude singer, who sometimes harmonize prettily and sometimes (unfortunately) kind of rap. The brightest moments on 1910 come when the band chills out, relinquishes control and skillfully delves into drawn-out, melodic jams in which it seems to have a lot of fun. JOSEY DUNCAN. Berbati's Pan. 9 pm. $6. 21+.

Doug Fir | 830 E Burnside St., 231-9663 [map]
[IDM CRUSH] German duo Mouse on Mars laid the foundation for the grand things that happened when the DFA remixologists got their hands on Black Dice. MoM is heavy, glitched-out as fuck and wicked intelligent. Noise kids will hate it because it's got hard beats. Dance-music kids will hate it because it makes them pay attention. But, by the time they get to the inscrutable and brilliant "Duul" (off their latest, Varcharz)—a mind-wrenching mash of tribal beats, industrial crush and IDM standards—they'll all be weeping joyfully...just before the compulsive flail hits. Ahh, how I love the compulsive flail. MICHAEL BYRNE. Doug Fir. 8 pm doors, 9 pm show. $15. 21+.

Holocene | 1001 SE Morrison St., 239-7639 [map]
[SHIRTLESS ROCK] I can't stop spreading the love for the Shaky Hands. They seem light years ahead of almost every band in Portland, and each show I see is better than the last. Fans of the Walkmen and Broken Social Scene will love this band, which employs some of the same held-note meditations on melody and harmony. To this formula they add an irresistible summertime porch-party vibe and an absolute love of the stage that shines through every chord and every bead of sweat falling from their faces. The Shaky Hands is the best rock band in Portland, and I'm going to get as much inspiration from them as I can before everyone else realizes it. CASEY JARMAN. Holocene. 8 pm. $5. 21+. Xiu Xiu, Dirty Projectors,Congs for Brums, Grouper withIlyas Ahmed[EMPATHY] I was warned well in advance of getting Xiu Xiu's new record, The Air Force, that I might just hate it. I was told that they'd gone pop, that band wasn't the same as the wounded, trapped animal they put forth on 2003's A Promise. Huh. A funny thing happened sitting there listening and waiting to get rejected by one of my favorite bands: It didn't happen. Xiu Xiu hasn't dropped the torch of the wrecked and abused; if anything, they're running faster with it, charging through whole new crowds of people and baring society's guts with their flickering light. The Air Force is more catchy than demanding and follows an overall musical logic closer to pop, but Jamie Stewart's emotive waver is still there (joined now by the vocals of cousin Carolee McElroy), and so is the panic, noise catharsis and clattering percussion. Prepare to have your heart torn out and studied: Xiu Xiu asks for nothing less. Still. MICHAEL BYRNE. Disjecta. 8 pm. $8 advance, $10 day of show. All ages. See also Impression page 37.-
