"Getting old ain't for sissies." --Bette Davis

Ain't it the truth. And we should know. This November, Willamette Week celebrates a quarter-century of arts coverage in Portland. That might not seem like a long time, but for an independent weekly, it's quite a spell. We take the occasion of our 1999 Fall Arts Preview to reflect on the last 25 years of arts in Portland. We interview older artists who have sustained the scene with their talent, knowledge and energy for as long as we've covered it, and we ask them to pick what they want to see this season. Our time lines track the history of important moments in each discipline over the last two and a half decades. You can also look forward to listings of don't-miss events you'll want to mark in your calendar immediately.

Keep in mind the wisdom imparted by our arts elders as you read this week's lead story, in which we feature relatively new artists you'll most likely hear from again--perhaps even in 25 years.
