Here is my problem. I am a guy with my first guy crush.
At first I was willing to accept that it probably would never
be. Lately this guy has seemed really seductive at times.
His tone, the nearness of his body to mine, and the things
he says make me wonder if he does not like me back. I am confused
about this behavior because it doesn't happen every time I
see him. Some days he will make fun of me in front of people
about things that we have discussed by ourselves. Other times
he asks me repeatedly when I want to hang out with him.
The other problem is that our lives are completely different.
I have a full-time job, want to do something with my life
and am not really into drugs. He works part-time, seems pretty
ambitionless and smokes pot all the time.
Now, you must be wondering what attracts me to such a guy.
When he is being nice to me, we talk about books, art and
cinema. I admire the fact that he has traveled a lot and can
always tell me a great story.
He is not openly gay or bisexual; there are just some discrepancies.
The way he stares just a little too long, really attentive
some days, and stuff like, "I would never say anything to
hurt you," and "I thought it was only going to be you and
me hanging out." Honestly, Ms. Chow, what straight guy says
that stuff to another guy?
Help me figure out my passive-aggressive boy!

All right. So we don't know if he's interested in you,
or if he's interested in guys. But we do know that you're
interested in guys, and especially in him. So have you told
him yet?
Of course, a guy who can't handle being out to you probably
can't handle a declaration of crush from you either. And if
he's insisting that he's straight, then you'll have to take
his word for it: There are many reasons why a straight guy
might engage in flirtatious behavior with you (maybe he's
lonely, likes attention, needs comforting, is physically nonjudgmental,
enjoys your company, etc.). In any case, his opinion counts
more than yours does, at least where his evening calendar
is concerned.
However, if you don't know where he stands on dating guys,
then gently ask him. If he seems unapproachable even on this
topic, then it's not going to work out. But maybe you already
have what you need from this relationship: the discovery that
you like guys. That's always a nice surprise, and something
you can build on in the future. Next time, though, try to
find someone who's not shy about it.

Dear Suey,
How can you tell if someone is gay or not? All my friends,
straight and gay, keep warning me off this one guy. My gay
friends say that he has all the earmarks and can go on for
hours listing them off: good dresser, love of theatre, emotionally
open toward men and women, etc. He's a good sport about all
the teasing he gets, and if I were forced to guess, I'd guess
he's straight--but only because he says he's straight. Otherwise,
I'd agree with our friends.
At least I can honestly say this much: If he is gay, he's
extremely closeted about it, and if he's straight, he's extremely
afraid of women (except that many of his friends are women,
so I guess what he's really afraid of is SEX). Nobody in our
circle, male or female, can claim that he's ever come on to
them, so no help there. It's not really my business, except
that I am developing a tiny smidgen of a crush on him (he's
such a good friend!). I think if I knew for sure that he was
gay, that crush would quickly fade (or if I knew he was straight,
I'd let it grow).
So, is there such a thing as a dead giveaway? Should I trust
the judgment of gaydar? Or should I take my troublesome straight-claiming
friend at his word (and throw myself and my heart at him)?

Dear Can't,
Gaydar never fails, but then again, gaydar can't prevent a
gay-targeted guy from falling in love, moving to Sweden, getting
married (to a biological girl!) and producing many children
and coffee-maker user manuals. This is one of the deep contradictions
of human nature.
I think your friend might be straight. Or maybe not. But
here's the real question for you: Do you want to get involved
with a guy who, as you say, is afraid of sex? That's more
trouble than falling for a gay guy.
