I'm writing on behalf of all decent-looking,
ethical, and intelligent men in their 20s and 30s who happen
to be seeking female companionship. Like many men I know,
I feel profoundly perplexed by the plethora of Portland women
who share our attributes, yet rarely give us a chance.
Granted, there are dangerous men in the world, so women should
be cautious. Unfortunately, I've discovered that caution frequently
gives way to fear. When it does, my politeness and sensitivity
don't seem to make the impression I would expect.
I frequently consider the perspectives of women; I've seen
much loneliness and heard enough complaining. I'd like to
offer some useful advice to your female readers: First, if
you're interested in a particular man, ask him out. Second,
if a man asks you out, consider it a compliment rather than
a threat. Finally, imagine what it's like to rarely if ever
know that someone finds us attractive. If your lives were
like this, you'd be very unhappy.

I'm a fiscally non-flakey guy of a dating age and very available.
So why haven't any women asked me out? Whatever happened to

hard it is to get a date and to put their own egos on the
line --let's see them take responsibility for making the first
move. I may be an idealist for believing in justice in the
battle of the sexes, but if it means I never date again, then
so be it.

I like collecting these letters, sorting them according to
length and penmanship, putting a few in time capsules and
forwarding others to the Olympic committee, arranging beauty
pageants and barbecues for them so that men may prove their
worthiness to Portland's available women. A few prospectives
are probably hopeless, sure, but most of these guys simply
need to improve their talents or dye jobs--I'm guessing they
can be trained. In any case, current dating patterns are becoming
so prehistorically stale, our scientists are beginning to
label them "genetic destiny"; maybe it really is time for
ladies to take the initiative.
Of course, some gals will say they already take the initiative,
at least on everything that matters--dishes, sex, marriage,
mortgage. Gentlemen, before you give up your prerogative to
make an effort, consider the consequences: worldwide female
domination.
Newsflash: Feminism does not tell us to chase after men.
If anything, feminism tells us to chase after women's music
festivals and to avoid men and their milito-corporate activities
completely. If you leave matters of reproduction entirely
in female hands, we will soon breed the human race into a
collection of Scott Baio lookalikes or maybe James Spader
clones.
Endless thrift shopping will fill your days. Arnold Schwarzenegger
will be dead meat, or possibly forced to start a cooking show.
Dating will become a euphemism for kissing, hugging and hand
holding. Everyone will talk about better sex and the big O.
You need only glance at the Oxygen channel to see your fate
writ large.
I believe male-female dating was always meant to be a delicate
balance between the needs of men and desires of women. Although
you may not believe it, women already take a lot of initiative
in the dating process. It's just that female come-on patterns
are subtle and hard to follow, usually starting with 6 to
9 months of ambiguously non-sexual flirtation, maturing into
the intimacy of sexual confession and comparison, culminating
in an awkward drunken pass at your best friend. A sensitive
guy will try to learn the signals and adjust his tactics accordingly.
Frankly, guys, it's your only hope.
