How exactly should I handle this? I want to have him in my
life, but at the same time, I don't know if I can only be
a friend to him. He has been a habit that I have tried unsuccessfully
to break--much like with smoking, I go through serious withdrawals.
I am so used to talking to him every day, but right now, it
just hurts too bad. I feel like maybe he has a point, maybe
we were just meant to be friends, but how do you get there
from here?
Friendship and forgiveness are excellent goals, but before
anything like that can take hold, you need to convince yourself
that the relationship is over and dead. Deader than a slug
on a Forest Park jogging trail, deader than an "Olympic Moment"
on NBC. Think back to other breakups, and the moment you realized
the thing was kaput. Maybe he skipped town to become a roadie
or investment banker, or maybe he told you he was gay. Maybe
you realized that his Spanish language skills would never
live up to expectations, or that he looks like a walrus in
a wetsuit when formally dressed. Every failed relationship
needs closure; many prefer something with the definitive stench
of death about it.
The help-industry people like to say that an emotional breakup
looks a lot like the grieving process; I think that's true.
Don't let your ex hang around while your mascara is running,
but don't think you have to do this on your own, either. If
you have trouble convincing yourself of the finality of the
dating phase, try asking your other friends to help out. I'm
sure they'll come up with all manner of descriptive terms
for your ghoulish ex and the moribund relationship. And if
you don't know who to talk to, then make new friends. At the
very least, they can take your mind off things by sharing
their own relationship horror stories.
At some point, maybe six months down the line, you'll find
yourself fantasizing about the day he asks you to come back,
and find that it moves you not so much. That's when you're
ready to start thinking about reestablishing the friendship.
But there's no need to push yourself. For a lot of us, being
friendly with the ex simply means resisting the urge to poke
his eyes out with chopsticks when he comes by to pick up the
kids, or trying not to pick on his lame Thanksgiving dinner
jokes in front of his new girlfriend. It's just something
we do for the sake of the children/mutual friends/overly attached
ex-in-laws. And maybe for ourselves, too, so that we can enjoy
the good times, avoid the bad and know that we are remembered
and loved.
