We have been seeing each other long enough to where the heart
is invested admittedly on both sides, yet his past fear of
commitment is likely to end our relationship. We have a monogamous
sexual relationship with an option to date, which both of
us have done.
It's the bottom of the ninth in this love game. Should I
wait for him to step up to the plate, or do I revoke his pass
and send him off in exile?

Of course, there is a certain type of man who is irritating,
and his endless whining about the shackles of commitment is
irritating too. And I emphatically do not wish to downplay
your pain in any way. But a monogamous sexual relationship
with the option to see (but I assume not touch) other people
sounds an awful lot like commitment to me.
Maybe I'm not understanding the problem correctly. Is his
lack of commitment exemplified by his refusal to co-sign a
mortgage or adoption papers? Is he protesting overly much
the idea of getting his tubes tied and/or attending Lamaze
class? Is he balking at underwriting your third graduate degree,
your six-month trip to Bali or your auto-insurance premiums
as you would so gladly do for him? If so, then he is obviously
an irresponsible lout who is willfully ignorant of your needs
and quite possibly not a good match for you.
However, if his lack of commitment is of a more existential
vein, if it still allows him to act responsibly and drive
your cat to the vet when it begins to trail its butt on your
couch, then maybe you can find a way to live with his "lack
of commitment" quirk.
This is all speculation, of course. Frankly, I can't tell
from your letter what kind of commitment problem your guy
has. And so I naturally wonder if you know yourself. Ask your
guy to tell you about his trepidations, and listen carefully
to he says, without trying to convince him that he should
consider feeling otherwise. Once you get a better picture
of what's going on with him, it might be easier to see what
your next move should be.

Dear Suey,
I'm a 30-year-old gay man who has yet to be in a significant
relationship. When I first came out 10 years ago, I had a
disastrous dating experience that lasted about two weeks.
Since then, nothing.
My approach to dating is, I suppose, a bit atypical for a
gay man. Most of my straight friends have met their partners
either through friends or at work. I really would like to
meet someone the same way. It feels fake to me to intentionally
seek out gay men at gay functions and gay establishments.
Being gay isn't exactly the most important part of my personality.
Simply having that in common with another person isn't enough
to base a friendship/relationship on.
Obviously, this approach isn't working too well.
My question is this: Am I living in La-La land? Are my expectations
really that insane? Must I really dive into the "gay community,"
start wearing the uniform, going to bars, queer skate night,
etc.?

If you've ever studied ancient history, i.e., the 1970s, then
you probably know that there was a time when queer people
were sequestered within the confines of their bathhouses (or
their pottery communes, in the case of lesbians). Gay and
bisexual couples got a lot of "static" for attempting to visit
roller rinks, discotheques, Peter Frampton concerts and other
youth meccas of straight-kid cool. In order to enjoy the fashionable
hobbies so freely granted to others, gays found it necessary
to develop an entirely separate social calendar. Thus, gay
culture was born.
No one really knows why the gay Peter Frampton club never
took off, but queer skate night survives to the present day.
For every gay cabaret club, there is a gay hiking club; for
every gay Madonna fan, a gay opera/country-western/rave enthusiast.
If you can't deal with queer skate night, then join a gay
book club, jogging club, karaoke club or (select a hobby)
club.
People find each other because of something in common that
goes beyond gender, sexual orientation, walks on the beach
or even hobbies. In the meantime, group activities provide
a reason to get out of the house, to speak your mind and to
engage in meaningless sex. Good luck.
