Dear Paul,
I don't think women hate shy men; in fact, some ladies are
fascinated by them. Take for example our multiple obsessions
with Jared Leto, Russell Crowe, James Dean, Hugh Grant and
David Letterman. Or maybe Johnny Depp, Lance Ito, Mr. Bean,
David Carradine and Roy Orbison. Don't be intimidated by the
femininely proclaimed "strong and silent" ideal; that's often
just a cipher for cute and shy.
Now, some might argue that women only like shy guys because
they don't talk much and the women think they can boss 'em
around. Be that as it may (and being shy does have disadvantages),
among women, men and humanity in general, there are many who
are capable of liking a shy man. So that leaves me to wonder
why you might think otherwise.
Your letter contains fewer clues than a presidential press
conference, so please understand that the rest of my comments
are pure speculation, probably irrelevant, although maybe
not any worse than the kind of analysis you get from news
mavens who have yet to realize that MSNBC guest spots are
for losers. That said, I wonder if it's possible that you
accidentally reversed your sense of causality--that you are
not shy, but only feel shy because you believe you are hated?
Could it be that you are over-generalizing about women from
one unfortunate encounter? Could it be that women are suspicious
of you rather than hateful, if only because they can't figure
out what you want from them? Or could it be that women honestly
despise you, not so much because you are shy but because you
tick them off in other ways?
In general, we reserve hatred for those who have done us
wrong; shy people are more likely to be ignored or overlooked.
Don't over-react to such snubs: Feeling like you don't exist
is annoying, but the situation can be rectified; it only requires
a little delicacy. If you happen to be a shy person, start
by revealing yourself to people you trust (rather than to
people you want to impress). And if you happen to be a friend
of a shy person, be patient. Eventually, the silence wears
on shy people too, and they'll start talking on their own.

Dear Suey,
Why do men hate women? I was in one relationship through college
and my early 20s, now dating again in my later years (I'm
28 now). Somehow, all the guys I used to think were sweet
and adorable are now bitter and so into complaining about
their exes, you'd think it was not just one woman but all
of womankind that did them in. I've got an ex to grind too,
but hey, come on! Whatever happened to fair play and not blaming
others and giving a gal a break? Oh, and by the way, most
of these guys don't bother to tell me that they're not ready
for another relationship until after they've slept with me.
How long do I have to wait until I meet a grownup?

Of course, not all men have a thing against women (see above).
But let's be realistic--we can't all be 20 and seven months
forever. As life comes crashing down with its frustrated dreams,
embarrassing karaoke experiences, overly/underly emotional
girl/boyfriends, and unpleasant bookstore cafe encounters,
we naturally become more wary of the more innocuous details
of life. A certain scratchy brand of tissue paper leaves a
scar of unfulfilling years spent under the tyranny of another
person's tightwad habits, a rock-hard scone elicits tears
from the one who lost a tooth and a modeling career 15 years
ago, a trip to Ikea becomes a walk through the morgue of relationships
past.
We can be pretty hard on each other. It's not easy to trust
again, not after you've discovered the depths of human cluelessness,
not after you've been duped by your own naiveté. Growing
up means finding a way to take each other seriously again,
even after we've proven ourselves to be complete and utter
fools. Some guys need time to figure things out and come to
terms; some gals need 20 years to do so.
Give yourself (and your guys) a break. If you're not ready
to have sex with men who aren't ready for a relationship,
then stop having sex with them with the expectation of a relationship.
If you're tired of listening to stories about his ex, change
the subject and talk about ex-movie stars and ab rollers instead.
Your future happiness depends your ability to adapt and divert.
Try to appreciate the dumb luck that saves you from your next
disastrous relationship.
